Take a Dip: Cool Spots to Dive Down in Vienna

Midsummer is drawing to a close and the oppressive heat that has driven us into the shade in recent weeks is slowly subsiding. Now that the temperatures are becoming more pleasant again, it’s time to enjoy the summer to the full before it’s gone for good. So why not make the most of the last warm days and take a dip in one of Vienna’s beautiful outdoor pools?

Bring the summer to a close – with a relaxing day in the pool, sun on your skin and the refreshing feeling of the water.

Krapfenwaldbad  swimming with a panoramic view

The Krapfenwaldbad is probably one of the most impressive outdoor pools in Vienna. Located high above the city, on the slopes of the Cobenzl, it offers a breathtaking view over Vienna. Here you can not only swim in the sports, family and children’s pools, but also get active on the volleyball court or let the little ones romp around in the playground. The classic outdoor pool food is available at the buffet – from crispy chips to refreshing drinks.

Not to forget: The dreamlike setting is perfect for atmospheric summer photos with the Vienna skyline in the background. So it’s no wonder that the motto “see and be seen” plays a major role here.

Lobau recreation area – pure nature and quiet bathing oases

If you are looking for a natural bathing experience away from the city, the Lobau recreation area is just the place for you. This part of the Donau-Auen National Park enchants with idyllic side arms and quiet spots that invite you to linger. Particularly recommended are the Panozzalacke, ideal for families, and the Dechantlacke.

Naturism is also possible in certain areas of the Lobau. Here you will find peace and quiet in the midst of nature – a place to switch off.

Alte Donau Lido – modern flair and culinary delights

Strandbad Alte Donau not only scores points with its great location on the water, but also with one of the trendiest open-air canteens in the city. The Donaubrise restaurant serves light, balanced dishes that are perfect for hot days and to cool down. From fresh salads to falafel plates with hummus  there’s something for everyone here, including vegetarians.

The sunbathing lawn, table tennis tables and bathing jetty are the perfect place to end the day.

Wienerbergteich – a green oasis in the middle of the city

The Wienerbergteich is tucked away in the middle of the 10th district – a true oasis of peace and nature. The large pond is perfect for swimming, while the surrounding lawns offer plenty of space for sunbathing and relaxing. The Wienerberg recreation area covers an impressive 117 hectares and offers numerous running and walking paths in addition to the pond. Don’t forget your air mattress and picnic basket, because people like to linger here.

Gänsehäufel – a classic for all ages

The Gänsehäufel has always been a popular bathing spot in Vienna. The extensive stretch of beach on the Old Danube stretches over two kilometers and offers numerous opportunities to jump into the cool water. Here you can also play beach volleyball, jump on the trampoline or use the nudist area, as nudism is also possible here.

For the more adventurous, there is a climbing park and stand-up paddling. The Gänsehäufel really does offer something for everyone.

Badeschiff – swimming in the heart of the city

The Danube Canal is one of the busiest places in Vienna, especially in summer. The Badeschiff, which is located directly in the canal, offers a cool opportunity to swim laps in the middle of the city with its 30-metre-long pool. You can swim here from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and admission costs 9 euros (concessions 5 euros). In addition to the swimming pool, there are also culinary highlights to round off your stay perfectly.

Kaiserwasser – swimming with a view of the skyline

Chlorine-free swimming fun awaits you in the Kaiserwasser, a side arm of the Old Danube. Surrounded by imposing trees, some of which are listed buildings, and with a view of the surrounding skyscrapers, this is one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in the city. The huge sunbathing lawn offers both sunny and shady spots, and four-legged friends are also welcome here.

Kongressbad – action and bathing fun for the whole family

The Kongressbad in the 16th district offers swimming fun for young and old. With adventure, sports and non-swimmer pools, ball courts, a fitness trail and a spacious children’s area with a playground and giant chess set, there is something for everyone here. The restaurant takes care of your physical well-being, while the large sunbathing lawn invites you to relax.

The Kongressbad has been in existence since 1928 and is therefore not only a place of action, but also a piece of Viennese history.

Schönbrunnerbad – historic ambience and first-class water quality

The Schönbrunnerbad is located in the picturesque Schönbrunn Palace Park and impresses with its water quality and historic ambience. The sun can be enjoyed particularly well on the wooden platforms at the edge of the pool or on the large sun terrace.

If you are looking for shade, you have to be quick, as the shady spots are very popular. The adjoining restaurant serves Mediterranean delicacies and sports enthusiasts can let off steam on the beach volleyball court. The entrance fee of 19 euros per day is above the city average, but the experience is well worth it.

Pirate’s Bay – sandy beach and nature on the New Danube

Vienna also has sandy beaches to offer! One of the most beautiful is the Pirate Bay on the New Danube. The 200-metre-long sandy beach is accessible free of charge and offers both sunny and shady spots under large poplar trees. The shallow entry into the water is particularly pleasant and ideal for anyone who wants to slowly get used to the cool water.

Strombucht – relaxation on the Old Danube

Strombucht on the Old Danube is another great bathing spot that you can use free of charge. With a spacious sunbathing lawn, a pebble beach and a shallow entrance into the water, it is ideal for a relaxing day of swimming. There is a drinking fountain and porta-potties on site, and if you are hungry, you can visit the bistro in the nearby Straßenbahnerbad.

Süßenbrunn bathing pond – a hidden gem on the outskirts

The Süßenbrunn bathing pond is off the beaten track. Here you will find clear, cool water and a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to relax. Your dogs are also welcome and can romp around to their heart’s content. As this place is a little out of the way, it is never crowded, even in good weather – ideal for a relaxing day in nature.

With so many bathing options, there is something for everyone – whether you want to relax in historic baths, swim in the middle of the city or relax in nature. Vienna has the right place for everyone to escape the summer heat.
