Our summer highlights in Austria

Our summer highlights in Austria

Summer has finally arrived! And this year we want to enjoy it to the full. That’s why we’ve put together an extensive to-do list and tell you what you shouldn’t miss in Austria this summer.

Zipline Annaberg

Is your spirit animal a nimble mountain goat? Or are you more of a team sloth? Whether you’re sporty or a homebody: In Mariazellerland you are guaranteed to be able to enjoy the summer as you like it. Gemeindealpe, Bürgeralpe and Annaberg invite you to hikes suitable for families and the Erlaufsee, which lies in the heart of Mariazellerland, provides plenty of refreshment with its turquoise-blue fresh waters.

Speaking of cooling down: In Mariazellerland you not only jump into the water, but can also use the swinging Zipline Annaberg. Over a length of no less than 1.4 kilometers, it goes at over 100 km/h in the direction of the valley station. Take our word for it: You won’t get enough of one ride, because the speed is really fun and the view over the idyllic region makes your heart beat faster.

You can get up there using either the Herzerlweg, which is easy to walk on, or using the Hennesteck chairlift. And then it’s off down again!

Festivals finally begin again

We’ve waited a long time, and open-air festivals across the country are finally back! After Nova Rock has already taken the stage with Karacho and great acts, this summer you can expect not only literal classics such as the Bregenz Festival (July 20th to August 21st) and the contemporary wellenklaenge in Lunz am See (July 15th to 30th ), but also many more highlights.

The Electric Love Festival (July 7th to 10th), Shutdown in the old nuclear power plant in Zwentendorf (August 6th) and of course Frequency (August 17th to 20th) are at the forefront.

Do you want to secure tickets for the last three giant event? Then try your luck in the Heineken MUSIC competition. The Dutch brewery is giving away several tickets, including even VIP entries. What do you have to do? It’s very easy: Collect bottle caps and can tabs, enter the winning code and channel your inner lady luck. There are also vouchers for the Stadthalle worth 25 euros as an instant prize.

Sandburg

Are you suffering from sea sickness? Then off to the Sandburg, the first beach bar in Linz, which is located directly on the banks of the Danube and is a place to relax in the Upper Austrian capital.

While you dance into the hot nights with a view of the gradually setting sun reflected in the Danube, you will be spoiled with beach delicacies from the food truck from midday onwards. Even if the motto of this inner-city holiday paradise is “Strand küsst Bar (where the beach kisses the bar)”, the focus here is not only on culinary delights on the beach, but also on a varied program.

At the weekend, live music with beats from popular DJs and young bands will sweeten your evening. So if you are in Linz soon, you should definitely stop by this cozy spot on the beach. We have summarized even more beach bars in Austria in another article.

Cool off in the most beautiful gorges in Austria

The summer of 2022 also promises many hours of sunshine and hot days. If you still want to go out into nature in such temperatures, you should visit one of the numerous beautiful gorges.

From the Leutasch Geisterklamm to the Raggaschlucht, the gorges throughout Austria are impressive. Just drive. You don’t want to decide on a stop and prefer to be on the go? Summer is perfect for an extended road trip.

You will also find plenty of cool routes for this in Austria. Whether driving through the beautiful Wachau with a few apricot dumplings as a snack or the classic road on the Austrian version of Route 66 through the Vulkanland with the window rolled down and loud music playing, the way is the goal.

Fresh summer

A summer resort sounds like the 19th century? Are you kidding me?! Refreshing yourself in the numerous Austrian health resorts in summer cannot go out of fashion. So treat yourself to a few days off and stroll through the picturesque ruins in Bad Gastein, bob in the listed thermal baths in Bad Vöslau or enjoy the foothills of the Alps in Reichenau an der Rax, where we can highly recommend the Landhaus Blauer Spatz accommodation for larger groups.

There are several well-equipped apartments on three floors and the overgrown garden provides plenty of shade at any time of the day. Definitely ideal for a break with the whole gang!

Off to the excellent water! It goes without saying that a dip in the cool water is always on the to-do list in summer. But especially in summer 2022 you should explore the wonderful lakes all over Austria. After all, in the latest report by the EU Commission, 99.2 percent of Austria’s bathing waters were classified as “excellent” or “good”. This puts Austria in first place in Europe.

Discover Bregenz

It goes without saying that Vorarlberg’s capital, in addition to its beautiful old town, can also boast of its location on Lake Constance. With a fresh breeze in your hair, you are guaranteed to get in the holiday spirit and quench your wanderlust. Our recommendations: Take advantage of the boat rentals and borrow a pedal boat for a little romantic tour on the lake.

Afterwards, it’s best to spoil yourself with a cocktail in the Beachbar Bregenz, ideally to enjoy the sunset. We have summarized even more fantastic excursion destinations in Vorarlberg in a separate article for you.

Lower Austria
Enjoy the Alps!

Ybbstal cycle path

In addition, our list for the summer in Austria cannot be missing a trip to the Ybbstal in Lower Austria. Not only does an idyllic landscape await you there, but there is also the varied Ybbstal cycle path.

This leads from Ybbs on the Danube over a distance of around 107.5 kilometers to Lunz am See and shows the most beautiful sides of the Mostviertel. The cycle path is mostly quite level, falls under the category “comfortable” and beautiful resting, relaxation and natural areas sweeten the endeavor.

We recommend the new section of the Ybbstal cycle path from Waidhofen an der Ybbs to Lunz am See to all those who find the entire route a bit too much.

Enjoy summer in Austria to the fullest!
