Sunny Summer Sendoff: Green Getaways for the Last Glimpse of Warmth

Fall, rest, repeat: As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, Vienna’s parks invite you to unwind, recharge, and embrace the rhythm of nature over and over again.

Just as summer gradually draws to a close, early fall bathes the city in a unique, almost slightly melancholy atmosphere. We all want to remember the last rays of sunshine on our skin and never do, because we can’t believe that this time it’s the last. And at the same time we enjoy the warming air, and where can we do that? In the parks and green meeting places of the city of our hearts. That’s where we go!

Palmenhaus Wien

Burggarten | Josefsplatz 1, 1010 Wien

The Burggarten is probably one of the most beautiful inner-city oases. The historic park delights us all year round with its well-kept charm, its natural backdrop and its historical significance. The public park with its central location on the Ring has been open to the public since 1919 and was formerly known as the “Garden of the Republic”. A detour is also recommended for joggers who like to do their laps early in the morning, as the park is particularly enchanting at this time of day with its tranquillity, the scent of dew and the unique light atmosphere.

In addition to the large pond and the imposing Hercules Fountain, special highlights include the secessionist butterfly house and the palm house, where you can enjoy a wonderful coffee. Even on days with bad weather, the wonderful glass enclosure is guaranteed to create a summer atmosphere. Probably one of the most beautiful parks at the end of the summer.

Kurpark Oberlaa | Laaer-Berg-Straße, 1100 Wien

The recreational area was originally planned and created for the Vienna International Garden Show in 1974. Today it serves all Viennese as a spacious park with lots to discover, including a swan pond and a flower labyrinth. The little ones can let off steam in the children’s playgrounds, and for the sports enthusiasts among you there is a large skate park and a volleyball court. If you suddenly get a craving while strolling and walking or just want to linger, you can treat yourself to a “Zuckergoscherl” in the Kurkonditorei Oberlaa. Otherwise, the Japanese garden on site is also a feast for the eyes.

Alois-Drasche-Park | 1040 Wien

Small but mighty! A relatively small park in the 4th district, framed on all sides by historic facades: Gardens line the asphalted path that surrounds the park and is popular with joggers. Old, large trees provide shade on warm days. There is a playground for children in the middle, and while the little ones run around, parents can enjoy the sun and chat. In the evening, you can also enjoy the atmosphere here with your favorite person with a bottle of wine, picnic basket and co. and take in the end of summer with all your senses to preserve the mood for cold winter days.

Augartenpark | 1020 Wien

On the border between Leopoldstadt and Brigittenau lies the beautiful Augarten, which catches the eye from afar with its high flak tower. Once there, you are rewarded with the oldest garden in Vienna, which is characterized by its wonderful symmetry and blaze of color. The paths are also adorned with shady avenues of chestnut, lime, ash and maple trees. Whether you want to exercise, sunbathe on the large lawns or relax on a shady park bench, the Augarten is a magical place that you should definitely visit. Unfortunately, like all other Viennese city parks, the Augarten is closed at night.

Botanischer Garten | Rennweg 14, 1030 Wien

A dreamlike urban oasis near Belvedere Palace, which impresses with its botanical diversity, quickly satisfies wanderlust and makes you forget that you are actually in the middle of the city. Founded in 1754, the garden covers around 8 hectares and is home to around 11,000 different plant species. If you want to learn something educational with free admission, a trip to the tropical house is highly recommended. A wonderful natural site in the middle of the city, which also provides plenty of shade thanks to the tall trees, awaits your visit.

Stadtpark Wien

Stadtpark | Parkring 1, 1010 Wien

The world-famous Vienna City Park (Stadtpark) stretches from Parkring to Heumarkt and with its 65,000 square meters invites you to linger. It was built in 1870 and is considered Vienna’s first public park. The park was planned and designed in the English landscape style, which has been retained to this day. Rich in sculptures and monuments, the park is a historic and colorful meeting place for young and old, tourists and locals, students and workers who spend their lunch break on a park bench.

The only thing that doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the park is the sight of the “Intercontinental” with its rugged, block-like architecture. If you really want to treat yourself, head to the Meierei, where the finest and most exquisite dishes are served in the Steirereck restaurant.
