10 things you can do for free in Graz

As a student you are often motivated to go on excursions – albeit with an eye on your wallet. That is why we are presenting you with 10 interesting destinations in and around Graz.

The best thing about it: These trips don’t cost you a penny! So what are you waiting for?

1. Schlossberg and castle

After a short ascent, the Graz Schlossberg offers an impressive view of the city. The castle, which has overlooked Graz for over 1000 years, also gave the city its name.

The Slovenian word “gradec” (English: small castle) is responsible for the naming of the Styrian capital.

2. Clock tower

If you are already on the Schlossberg, you should not miss this highlight. One of the city’s landmarks is the Graz clock tower, which has probably been watching over the city since the thirteenth century.

3. Kalvarienberg

The second, often forgotten mountain of Graz is the Kalvarienberg. Number 2 after the Schlossberg is however similarly steeped in history and also worth the climb.

The three large crosses on the summit can hardly be overlooked and the Kalvarienbergkirche also offers an impressive view of the surrounding region. A visit to the monastery and the three Marys complete the visit. Perfect for everyone who already knows the Schlossberg or has a soft spot for the historical past of the church.

4. Parks

Whether in the Volksgarten, the ORF Park or the Stadtpark Graz, you can enjoy the four seasons everywhere. If you want to relax or do some sport, parks are ideal for this.

5. Old town

The old town of Graz rightly deserves its status as a UNESCO cultural heritage site. With historical architecture and narrow streets, this place exudes a relaxed and historical flair, especially in summer.

The old town is worth a trip at any time of the year and offers a lot to discover.

6. Swimming lakes

Refreshing walks in the cool air are always nice – especially if you run along the water. Whether Thalersee, Schwarzlsee or Hilmteich, Graz and the surrounding area offer some great lakes, which are worth a trip in both summer and winter.

For romantic walks, well-deserved study breaks or cool refreshments, these and many other lakes are waiting to be discovered by you!

7. Schöckl

There is of course one thing that cannot be missed out of this list – the Schöckl. Despite its low altitude (1445), the legendary local mountain of Graz offers a view that is second to none.

In summer you can look for the weather witches who, according to legend, brew the hail that often plagues Eastern Styria. The Schöckl is a beautiful and classic destination for hikers and adventurers in every season.

Put on your hiking boots and head up the mountain!

8. Rettenbach Gorge

If you still have energy after your hike on the Schöckl, or if you prefer a hike through a gorge, the Rettenbach Gorge is the ideal destination for you!

Here you can enjoy nature in absolute peace. On the hike you can discover colourful types of rock and marvel at small waterfalls.

You don’t have a lot of time? No problem! You can cross the Rettenbachklamm with sturdy shoes in about half an hour.

9. Frohnleiten

If you are travelling by car or if you fancy a longer bike tour, the town of Frohnleiten is a worthwhile destination! In about 30 minutes by car or a one and a half hour bike tour, from where you can stroll through the historic, flower-adorned city centre in spring and summer.

With its picturesque main square and historical places, the city on the Mur is worth a half-day trip! The highlight of the tour is Rabenstein Castle, which is a little outside of the city.

10. Murradweg

A tip for the athletes among you! If you live in Graz and enjoy cycling, we have some good news for you. Graz is located directly on the well-known Mur Cycle Path. No matter how you plan your stage or just have a small bike tour in mind, the numerous bike paths in and around Graz offer you a varied experience with a sporting character.

But beware: Don’t forget the obligatory bottle of water, because who knows, maybe you won’t get enough of your excursions in and around Graz.

Conclusion

As you can see, Graz has a lot to offer! Whether you are an athlete, nature lover or history freak, this city has a lot to offer. And as we promised in the beginning – all those things do not cost you a penny.
